Criminal defense

How to choose the best criminal lawyer in Tehran

The short answer: someone who reads your documents, speaks plainly, and does not promise a result. Below I explain why. And if you already have a criminal case, you can call me right now. I am Seyed Mahdi Mousavi, a trainee lawyer in Tehran.

A desk covered with criminal case files and a scale of justice First stepKeep the summons and call

A criminal case usually shows up unannounced: a call from the police station, a summons from the prosecutor's office, or a complaint you never knew about. The first hours often decide a lot, because whatever you say or sign during questioning stays with the file until the end.

That is why it helps to have someone who knows how these cases work look at your documents before you go in, and tell you what to say, what to leave out, and which of your rights to use.

The cases I help with

For people filing a complaint and for people who have been accused. Most of what comes to me falls into these groups:

Fraud and breach of trust

Proving the loss and the deception is not simple. We lay payment records, messages and witnesses side by side so the complaint or the defense stands on solid ground.

Bounced cheques and financial offences

The criminal route for a cheque differs from the civil one, and choosing wrong burns time.

Assault and threats

A forensic medical report, witnesses and the timing of the complaint matter here. Whether the offence can be dropped by the victim also changes the settlement route.

Insult, defamation and false statements

The line between criticism and a crime is thin. We check which side of it your words fall on.

Security charges and organised offences

These files are sensitive and have their own rules for notification and questioning. The earlier you get advice, the better.

Cybercrime and smuggling

I have written separate pages for these two areas; the links are further down this page.

A wall of documents and evidence from a case

If a summons has arrived, start here

This is not the exact letter of the law, just experience shared by many cases. For your own file, bring the documents and I will be specific.

  • Photograph the paper. Note the date of notification, the branch and the charge. Deadlines are counted from that date.
  • Do not sign anything without advice. Your statement should say what you really said, not someone else's reading of it.
  • Do not delete evidence. Deleting a message or a file, even with good intentions, can be turned against you.
  • Do not send threatening messages to the complainant. Every message you send can end up in the file.

Mistakes I see again and again

Waiting to see if it "sorts itself out"

Legal deadlines wait for nobody. Missing an appeal window can close the door completely.

Going to a middleman instead of a lawyer

Anyone who says "I know the judge or the investigator" will either take your money or pull you into a crime. Read my article on influence peddling.

Explaining too much during questioning

Sometimes the more you talk, the heavier the file gets. What is worth saying should be clear beforehand.

Hiring on price or promises alone

The cheapest or the most confident option usually ends up costing more.

Facing a criminal case? Call before you do anything

The first call makes clear how much time you have and which step you must not get wrong.

What makes the best criminal lawyer in Tehran?

There is no official list of "the best"; anyone who claims the title is advertising. These are signs you can actually check:

  • You can verify their licence with the Bar Association or the Judiciary's lawyers' centre.
  • They look at the ruling, summons and documents before making promises.
  • They tell you the weak points of your case at the start, not after taking the fee.
  • They sign a written contract and give a receipt.
  • They do not guarantee the outcome or claim to know the judge.
  • They answer your calls and keep you informed at each stage.

I would like to be judged by these same standards. If you want, a short call is enough to see whether we are a good fit.

FAQ

Questions people ask me most

Who is the best criminal lawyer in Tehran?

There is no official ranking. The right lawyer for your case is one who reads your documents, names the risks openly, and does not promise a result. You can test any lawyer, including me, against the checklist above.

How much time do I have after receiving a summons?

It depends on the type of notification and the authority that issued it, and it must be read off the document itself. Show the date of notification to a legal professional quickly instead of waiting.

Do I have to have a lawyer during questioning?

In most cases you have the right to a lawyer and it is strongly advisable. For certain offences, including security cases, special rules govern a lawyer's presence during the investigation stage, which is why advice before you appear matters.

What is the difference between a compoundable and a non-compoundable offence?

With a compoundable offence the case can be stopped or the sentence reduced if the victim agrees. With non-compoundable ones the prosecutor can continue even if the victim withdraws. The charge title usually tells you which it is, but each file needs to be checked.

I live outside Tehran. Can I still file my case with you?

Yes. Consultation is by phone and you send your documents digitally. Cases are accepted from across Iran.
